Dell XPS 27 All-in-One UK Review: A superb, powerful all-in-one PC

Written by  Nov 16, 2017

The Dell XPS 27 All-in-One is a powerful all-in-one PC, it dares to emulate the iMac and to plays to Windows' strengths.

Design

With its 27" display, the XPS 27 is a real attention grabber for all of the right reasons. It has six imposing speakers at the front. With a glossy black frame, it's not your average all-in-one.

Then, there's the clever stand. It's so flexible, it can go from straight upright to almost flat. Which is great when using the touchscreen, you can adjust angle virtually anyway you wish.

As flexible as the stand is it's heavy, overall this all-in-one comes in at 17.3kg, making it awkward to handle.

Dell has fitted a USB3 port, 3.5mm audio output and SD card on the side, which is handy for easy access. For anything connected permanently to the XPS 27, there's a collection of ports on the rear, located in a recess cut into the back of the screen.

You get four USB3, two Thunderbolt 3-powered ports, HDMI and DisplayPort outputs and Gigabit Ethernet (there's also 802.11ac Wi-Fi built-in). Unfortunately, there's no video input, stopping you from using the XPS 27's screen with external devices.

Keyboard and mouse

The XPS 27 comes with Dell’s Premiere wireless keyboard and mouse, both of which can be connected to up to three different computers, with selector switches letting you choose which one to control.

The keyboard is a joy to use, with the keys having plenty of travel and a decent amount of feedback. The mouse is not quite the premium quality of the keyboard, but has all the functions you need.

Display

Dell has fitted a 4K (3,840 x 2,160) screen, and it's immense. At maximum brightness (a decent 386cd/m2), we measured the screen was able to produce 99.2% of the sRGB and 96.3% of the Adobe RGB colour gamuts.

Running Dell's own calibration software, we found that colour coverage increased to 100% sRGB and 99.7% Adobe RGB. With the excellent contrast of 1,148:1, the IPS panel used here is fantastic, really highlighting the XPS 27's premium quality.

Audio

The awesome looking speakers are not just for show. You get four full-range drivers and two tweeters at the front, with two passive radiators delivering bass. Videos, movies and TV come to life and they give a real bass punch to soundtracks and sound effects, negating the need for external speakers.

Performance

We had a Kaby Lake quad-core Intel Core i7-7700 model. Which offered plenty of power and coped with everything we through at it whilst running several tasks and about a dozen open windows, the XPS 27 is very quick. There's a fast 512GB SSD fitted too, so Windows 10 purrs along without incident.

It has an AMD Radeon RX 470 GPU. This is a low-end graphics card, running Forza Horizon 3 at 1080p with Ultra detail, for example, we saw a frame rate of 15fps; dropping detail to Medium saw performance improve to a playable 36fps.

If you are after a powerful and flexible all-in-one with a brilliant display, the XPS 27 All-in-One is the one. It's not cheap, though, with the model we reviewed costing £2,599.99.
